JAMAICA DICTIONARY - How to speak pure Jamaican Patois

JAMAICA DICTIONARY

"Mi not naa wot him taakin aboot mon?"

Greeting people in Jamaican patois

I was wandering through Google looking for Jamaica relates articles that may be of interest to the readers of this Blog and anyone who will be staying in our villas on Jamaica this year and I came across a bunch of websites that offer an insight in the Jamaican English, Patois or Patwa. The best of these sites I have to say is http://www.speakjamaican.com/jamaican-translation/ a websites dedicated to Jamaica speak.

There is a great dictionary which is very helpful as not everyone will speak the same version of Jamaican Patois or Jamaican Patwa. People in the Jamaican Countryside speak differently from those in the cities and people of a certain socioeconomic status are likely to mix Standard English.

I read through the site and roared with laughter at some of the tranlations. I remember a friend of mine teaching me to speak patois, it went something like this:
"Ah bet yoo caanaat say "Beer Can" without soundin like Bob Marley axing fer him breakfast" Needless to say I cannot speak patwa.

Never mind though, take a good look through this great website and polish up on your Jamaica Patois for your visit to http://www.MyLuxuryVillas.com

Jamaica - Jamaican Food -Authentic Jamaican recipes

ACKEE & SALT FISH

Ackee & Saltfish, Jamaicas national Dish

Ackee. Jamaicas national fruit

What Is Ackee?

Not only is ackee part of Jamaica’s national dish, but it is considered Jamaica’s national fruit. Grown on an evergreen tree, this bright red fruit ripens to break open, revealing an edible yellow-white flesh and black seeds. This edible flesh is called the aril.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 lb Saltfish (dried, salted codfish)
  • 12 fresh ackees or 1 (drained) can of tinned ackees
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp of butter
  • 1/2 a hot chilli pepper (ideally Scotch Bonnet)
  • 1 sweet pepper
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cover the saltfish in cold water. Let soak overnight (minimum 8 hours) changing the water several times (this removes most of the salt).
  2. Bring a pan of cold water to the boil and gently simmer the fish for 20 minutes (until the fish is tender).
  3. Chop the onion, sweet pepper, chilli pepper and tomato.
  4. Remove the fish from water and allow to cool.
  5. Remove all of bones and skin then flake the flesh of the fish.
  6. Melt the butter in a frying pan and stir fry the onion, black pepper, sweet pepper, chilli and thyme for about 3 minutes.
  7. Add the tomatoes and flaked fish and stir-fry for another 10 minutes.
  8. Add the Ackee and cook until hot throughout. Stir gently to avoid breaking-up the Ackee. Thats it! Serve it up and enjoy!
If you enjoy this recipe then you will want to learn some more of these fantastic Jamaican recipes. These can be found on what I consider to be the very best Jamaican food website on the Internet http://foodjamaica.net/

You will be happy to know that you can get Ackee and saltfish anywhere on Jamaica or in the Caribbean. Keep an eye out for this fantastic dish when you come and stay with Jamaican Treasures, will will be happy to point you to the best places to eat.

Bob Marley - The Legend lives on

FAMOUS JAMAICANS: BOB MARLEY

One Love - Bob Marley

If, like me, you regard your teenage heydays as the early 70`s then you came into contact with Reggae music, Trojan records, Ska, Desmond Dekker  and more. The big star though was Bob Marley and his Reggae music.

Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music.
Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love -- inspired by his belief in Rastafari -- was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

Bob's story is that of an archetype, which is why it continues to have such a powerful and ever-growing resonance: it embodies political repression, metaphysical and artistic insights, gangland warfare and various periods of mystical wilderness.
And his audience continues to widen: to westerners Bob's apocalyptic truths prove inspirational and life-changing; in the Third World his impact goes much further.

Bob Marley gave the world brilliant and evocative music; his work stretched across nearly two decades and yet still remains timeless and universal. Bob Marley & the Wailers worked their way into the very fabric of our lives.

"He's taken his place alongside James Brown and Sly Stone as a pervasive influence on R & B", says the American critic Timothy White, author of the acclaimed Bob Marley biography CATCH A FIRE: THE LIFE OF BOB MARLEY. "His music was pure rock, in the sense that it was a public expression of a private truth."
It is important to consider the roots of this legend: the first superstar from the Third World, Bob Marley was one of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time and his music could have been created from only one source: the street culture of Jamaica.

The days of slavery are a recent folk memory on the island. They have permeated the very essence of Jamaica's culture, from the plantation of the mid-nineteenth century to the popular music of our own times.

Montego Bay Jamaica

MONTEGO BAY (MOBAY) JAMAICA

Montego Bay Jamaica

Montego Bay or "Mobay" as it sometimes known, is a great place for a family holiday or a pleasant vacation if you are traveling solo. Theres lots to do and plenty to see in Montego Bay. There are companies who offer tours of Montego Bay and Mobay shopping trips.

Mobay underseas tours are another great attraction for the tourists;

MoBay Undersea Tours - The "Coral See", is unique vessel, is a semi-sub reef explorer, where the passengers go down into the hull of the vessel. Below, in the hull, are panoramic viewing windows, where you can see the colourful marine life and fishes of the Montego Bay Marine Park in air-conditioned comfort. Throughout the cruise, a marine life expert will explain the features of the reef and its occupants, and answer all the questions you may have. At one point, the vessel stops and you can witness a scuba diver feeding the ever-hungry reef fish. See more "What to do in Montego bay"
MOBAY Facts
