Jamaican culture - Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk what is it?

GANJA - MARIJUANA

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Ganja - a strong-smelling plant from whose dried leaves a number of euphoriant and hallucinogenic drugs are prepared. Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria."

There you are, I bet you all wanted to know what it was that those nice Rastafarians were smoking when you last visited the Caribbean.

Rastafarians regard the smoking of Marijuana /Ganja as a sacrement, as part of their religeon. I bet you thought they were just out to have a great time? The very thought of it!

if you want to read about Marijuana and the affects it has on your brain then your in luck as I have just the very website for you to visit. Link

Rastafarians and Jamaica - a brief history of Rastafarianism

MARCUS GARVEY FOUNDER OF THE RASTAFARIAN MOVEMENT

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940)

You cannot mention the Caribbean without mentioning the music of Bob Marley, you cannot mention Bob Marley without reference to Rastas, Rastafarians or the rastafarian movemrnt. All are important parts of the culture of the Caribbean and Jamaica in particular. So, lets take this one step at a time.

Rastafarians, Rastas or The Rastafarian movement, what's it all about bro? Well, I don´t know because I´m not that clever but I do know people who have websites all about Rastafarianism so I thought I´d take a peek for you.
The Rastafari movement is a "messianic religio-political movement" (thats a mixture of religeon and politics to laymen like you and I, unless your a clever cloggs!) that began in the Jamaican slums in the 1920s and 30s.

The most famous Rastafari is Bob Marley, whose reggae music gained the Jamaican movement international recognition.

There is significant variation within the Rastafari movement and no formal organization. Some Rastafarians see Rasta more as a way of life than a religion. But uniting the diverse movement is belief in the divinity and/or messiahship of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, the influence of Jamaican culture, resistance of oppression, and pride in African heritage.

The Rastafarian lifestyle usually includes ritual use of marijuana, avoidance of alcohol, the wearing of one's hair in dreadlocks, and vegetarianism.

The Rastafarian movement is generally said to be founded November 2, 1930, the year Emperor Hailie Selassie I (1892-1975) was crowned, but based in a movement of the 1920s and in Jamaica by a flambouyant chap called Marcus Garvey (who counts amongst his followers the father of one Malcolm Little, later to become Malcolm X) who preached "Back to Africa" in the southern States of the USA.

So, what are the beliefs of the Rastas?

Rastafarians believe in the Judeo-Christian God, whom they call Jah. In general, Rastafarian beliefs are based in Judaism and Christianity, with an emphasis on Old Testament laws and prophecies and the Book of Revelation. Allegorical meaning is often sought in the Holy Piby.

There is so much to read on this subject and it would be unfair of me to rip-off someone elses work so, I´m giving you the link so you can read all about the Rastafarians yourself Link to Rastafarianism

Villa rentals Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Thailand, Bali

HOW TO FIND A LUXURY VILLA IN JAMAICA, MEXICO, BALI

It´s Bognor Regis you say? Not Bali?
Luxury villas. There are thousands of websites offering "Luxury Villas" in this place and that place. The trouble is, how do you define "Luxury"? The problem is this; What one man calls luxury another man calls...er...not luxury! Bog standard, plain or if they are very rude, a bloody dump!!

There are folk who love to go to far flung places for their holidays and places like Bali, Jamaica, Mexico, Thailand and Bognor Regis are very well sought after holiday destinations. (I refuse to remove Bognor Regis from this text, my auntie Joan loves it there!)

All of these holiday locations offer what they consider to be "Luxury Villas" but are they really luxury villas or has some fast talking tour promoter decided that they are Luxury villas and not a villa that looks nice and has a posh toilet?

There is a website (you knew I was going to say this, I bet?) that does do "Luxury Villas" that are the real deal http://www.luxuryvillatreasures.com/ they have a collection of the most luxurious villas worldwide and what's more, you can see them all on their website. Take your time and have a really good look at what a real luxury villa is all about. You´ll be suprised with the difference.

If you have already been with this company then please add a comment to this blog, we would all love to read your thoughts.

Have a nice holiday!

Exclusive villa resorts Jamaica - Golf holidays and Golf villas Jamaica

 THE TRYALL CLUB -  JAMAICA
Would you fancy living like the folks on the hill?
Where to stay in Jamaica - Golfing holidays

I am often asked by people "Where is the best place to stay on the Island of Jamaica?" My answer is always the same - "Everywhere is the best place to stay, if your visiting Jamaica!"

It´s true, the whole island is a paradise, so anywhere would be great. Now, if your a golfing person and somebody that likes their comforts and their little luxuries, then that's a different matter.
Take people who like golf, no, theres no such person, take people who LOVE golf! Now they are different to other human beings, they dress differently, that's for sure (I never looked good in baggy plus-fours, floppy tartan cap and brown shoes.) they also talk differently "Birdies, Eagles, in the rough etc" I don´t have a clue what they are on about. they also spend a lot of time walking about clubbing with some old bag on their arm.

One thing they do have, they have an eye for detail and they know a good thing when they see one. The Tryall Club near Montego bay is one such place you will find these sports fanatics. take a look and see what's on offer.

The Tryall Club - Montego Bay - Jamaica

Tryall Club is a luxury villa resort set in 2,200 acres with stunning hillside and ocean vistas. Clustered amid acres of spectacular gardens, over 70 villas cascade from the hilltops to the golf course and down to the Caribbean Sea.
Each villa has its own distinctive charm brought to life by comfortable décor, personal touches and panoramic views.

To stay in one of Tryall Club’s privately owned villa is to immerse yourself in the comfort and personality of a luxurious island home. Villas range in size from two to seven bedrooms each with their own private pool and are fully staffed with a cook, maid, laundress, gardener and butler.

Service at Tryall is truly superlative. From the moment you arrive, you will be embraced by Jamaican friendliness and charm. You’ll find the Tryall Club staff gracious, welcoming and eager to make your stay one of the most memorable of your life.

Pay a visit to the Tryall Club website and I would be happy to read any comments you have. Just add a comment on this blog.

Where to go Map of Jamaica - What does the word "Jamaica" mean?

A guide to the Island of Jamaica

Map of Jamaica - Where is your favourite place?

Heres a question we are always asked;"What does the word "Jamaica" mean?

Jamaica is a flower (Hibiscus) that is dried and then tea is made from it. The tea is served cold (as an agua fresca or in Spanish "Fresh water").

In English, it would be Hibiscus tea, but the beverage itself is also known as "Jamaica".

If I was to ask you to name somewhere on the island of Jamaica, where would it be? I bet Kingston would be in the top 3 as would Montego Bay not surprisengly as both are the subject of many films, books and songs and are synonamous with Jamaica.

Jamaica has so many great places and with names that are unforgetable; Umbrella Point, Black River, Alligator Pond, Bog Walk,  and I think children of the seventies in the UK won´t have let Grange Hill go unoticed. While the Spanish influence is there with Ocho Rios (Eight Rivers) Santa Cruz and of course Spanish Town amongst many other locations.

At Jamaican Treasures we have villas for rent all over the island of Jamaica as well as other places in the Caribbean, all you have to do is let us know where you would like to stay and we can sort you out with the most fantastic of holiday villas on the island of Jamaica.

Please visit our websites to see what great Jamaica villas and Caribbean holidays we have to offer.

A Brief History of Jamaica

"Normally the tide doesn't come in this far?"
I was trawling the Internet, as one does, for historical content, the history of Jamaica and how the present day nation came into being. Boy! was there some historical content posted out there. No matter, amongst all the long winded waffle and the highbrow intelectual scribblings I found a great site called "Jamaicans.com" and they have a fantastic "brief history of Jamaica" that gives the reader a quick and informed historical lesson on the island nation of jamaica. So, here it is.

I. Pre-Colombian Jamaica

Prior to the arrival of Columbus in 1494, Jamaica was inhabited by Arawaks, living in simple communities based on fishing, hunting, and small scale cultivation of cassava. The impact of the contact with the Spanish was traumatic, and these communities disappeared in 70-80 years. Plunder, disruption of economic activities, new diseases, and migration decimated the indigenous population. Only a few artifacts-facts, examples of which are on display at the small museum at White Marl, and a few Spanish corruptions of place names (such as Ocho Rios) remain from this period. Otherwise, there is no Arawak influence on the subsequent development of life on the island.

II. The Spanish Occupation, 1494-1655

Disappointed by the absence of gold on the island, the Spanish used Jamaica as a base for supporting the conquest of the Americas, particularly Mexico with its treasures of gold and silver. The population of the Spanish settlement, including their slaves, was never large. It was administered from the Town of Santiago de la Vega, now called Spanish Town, and much of the architecture of the original buildings is still evident today in the town square. Economic activity consisted primarily of production for domestic consumption, and to a lesser extent the supply of Spanish ships.

In 1655, it was captured by the British expedition led by Admirals Penn and Venables, following their unsuccessful invasion of Hispaniola. By this time, the island was of little significance to the Spanish crown, and accordingly, very little was done to defend it against the British.

As with the previous period, the influence of the Spanish settlement on the subsequent social, economic and political life of the island was marginal. Apart from remnants of buildings with the distinctSpanish colonial architectural styles, and names of places, there is very little visible evidence of the Spanish occupation.
