Montego Bay Jamaica

MONTEGO BAY JAMAICA

Carnival time in Montego Bay, Jamaica

Montego Bay: The name Montego Bay has been Anglesized from the Spanish name "Manteca Bahia" or "Lard Bay" (Correct Spanish being Bahia Manteca)because an idustry grew up in this area producing lard. You will find many names that have been Anglesized in the Caribbean, Bahamas and the Americas, such as The Bahamas (Bajas Mares or shallow seas)

Montego Bay is Jamaica's second city in size and importance, but it is the island's tourism capital and is possibly the most well know, with many songs and stories made about the city. Montego Bay boasts the most hotel accommodation in Jamaica, also the most transport facilities and is a great cosmopolitan holiday centre, offering a wide choice of modern amenities.

Montego Bay is three cities in one, or that what it seems to be because there are three definate distinct areas of the city. Theres the city streets and town centre area, with the bustling and buzzing of everyday modern life.
Then, there is the "Hotel strip" or Hotel area.

This is the part of Montego Bay that runs from the centre for about a mile and a half past the famous Doctor's Cave Beach and out to the Dead End Bar area. And last but not least, there are the outlying Hotels and villas that populate the Montego bay Hillside and beaches.

Montego Bay is "Montego Bay" and there are no comparisons, it is unique in it´s daily life and culture and also the look of "Mobay" as it can range from quaint to historical to ultra modern.

The local vernacular might take some getting used to, it is called "patios" and is a mixture of many dialects and accents but great fun to pick on and there will always be someone ready to explain it to you.

As far as tourism and places of interest, you are spoilt for choice if you stay in Montego Bay.
