Jamaican Food - Jamaica food quiz

'Mmmm, It tasted better than it looked!'

Jamaica food quiz
OK, just for fun and no money involved at all, I have a quiz for you dear Blogpoppers reading this (I hope) Jamaica Holidays Blog.
For my New Years Day lunch, Mrs. BlogSpot made a delightful Pork roast with all the trimmings and we started, as one might expect, with an aperitif, followed by something stronger and then we got on to the real hard stuff before having a Rum and then wine with our lunch.
Needless to say my vision may have been slightly impaired with this cocktail of hooch and so I could be forgiven for thinking that Mrs. BlogSpot had been on the sauce long before lunchtime as my lunch contained this unusual item (see photo)
I did eat the thing, it tasted delicious, in fact I had 4 of them, granted they were not all that shape.
Q1) What do you reckon it was?
Q2) What do you reckon it looks like?
Answers on a postcard please to robbie@myluxuryvillas.com

Dogs in Jamaica

Roof! Roof!

Just when you thought you had seen it all, something always manages to surprise or shock you, or both. I live in the countryside of Andalucia close to a white village (Pueblo Blanco) called Villanueva del Trabuco, which is north of Malaga city 800m above sea level. Yes, Redneck country.
The village is quiet and ordinary and not a lot happens, the odd murder here and there, you know an everyday village. The villagers are nice people, very kind and pleasant but they cannot park their cars, they just stop when they get to where they are going and then abandon the vehicle while they do their business.

A dog with a head for heights!

The Zebra crossings are the best place to abandon their vehicles as the blue and white stripes are a handy landmark for when they need to extricate the car, likewise roundabouts, driveways, pavements and bridges are all great places to stop and leave your 4 x 4 for a few hours.
They never turn up for appointments, well, when I say never I mean they never turn up on time and sometimes they just “forget” to turn up. This applies to all trades, not just builders and painters but literally everyone, their attitude is “mañana – mañana” (tomorrow..Maybe)
So you see, I’m used to things not working properly, people not turning up, lorries parked next to the school crossing, the local politicians handing house cigarette lighters with their names on prior to polling and any number of daft and unusual things.
So, when I was going to the shop in the village this morning, I wasn’t surprised to hear a barking dog, the village is full of them, what did surprise me though was the fact the dog was 60ft up on a plastic rooftop in the rain and it was barking like mad at me, why? God knows but it wasn’t on a chain or rope, it was barking down from the edge of the roof.
Is it possible the dog was shouting “Roof! Roof!”? Am I now a latter day Doctor Doolittle and can understand the languages of animals or is it just another unsurprising surprise from this crazy village?
If you have a photo of a braver (stupid!) dog in the whole of Jamaica or the caribbean then I would love to see it, come to think of it, I would love to see this dog on ground level, via the stairs if possible.

Jobs in Jamaica - Rope holder to insane window cleaner

"Mek sure ya don start scratchin yer bum now!"

What’s the worst job you ever had? Mine was working on the railway tracks in Surrey, in England. The pay was poor; the job was very dangerous due to the very fast trains and the electric railway line. We worked all hours in all types of weather but we were happy.
No we bloody well were not! I came home covered in oil and gnat bites.
Mind you, there are worse jobs, by far, in other countries but you just can’t beat the really dumb jobs. Those mind – numbing, mundane, pointless waste of time jobs that exist all over the world, some born out of necessity, others just impromptu or quick fixes to local problems.
Take this couple of numb-skulls. Come on now, how desperate for work must you be to let someone dangle you out of a window many stories up whilst you replace a broken pane of glass? The glass was most likely broken by the window cleaner just before he fell, he was most likely also dangled from the same window (by the same guy, he looks like he is a regular at this type of work.)
Hey-ho! Anyone else got anything stupid to share

MEN VS WOMEN - Church cook-off - Food - Jamaica Gleaner - Thursday | December 1, 2011

MEN VS WOMEN - Church cook-off - Food - Jamaica Gleaner - Thursday December 1, 2011

Reverend Joseph regretted booking a wedding the same day as the Cook-off!
The St Andrew Church of Christ annual cook-off - men vs. women. It’s very nice to see that Jamaican men and woman are just as daft and competitive as everyone else. It sounds like war in the church hall, pots of jam at ten paces and see who can cozy up to the vicar to obtain them few extra points. Take a read, it’s a gas.

Levi Roots wins recipe row - Jamaican food

"Actually, old boy, the name is Keith!"
I do like to bring you interesting jamaica stories, no one wants to be thought of as a "one trick Pony" and harp on about the truly fantastic, amazing luxury villas that you can rent from Jamaican Treasures. No! I like to diversify.

Heres a great story from my favourite online newpaper The Jamaican Observer, all about a dude called Levi Roots (actual name is Keith Graham..not a very "Yardie" name!) who has defended a case brought against him by his ex-partner (business partner) from Brixton, London, who claims Keith, or "Roots" ripped off his recipe for some of the Jerk food mix listed in his "Reggae,Reggae Cook Book"

The judge decided in favour of Mr Roots. Read the article, it's very interesting.

Here’s a great video I found whilst looking for a Jerk recipe. The video is for Jamaica Restaurant Week, a choice of some of the finest Jamaica restaurants get to show off their menus. Check out the amazing pizza and the little cutie presenting this little video. Mind you, Stephanie Scott rabbits on a bit but I guess she's just excited.
Theres no excuse for not knowing where to eat when you book one of Jamaican Treasures Villas.

Jamaica Nightlife

Roaming Donkey - A guide to the best places to play in Jamaica

Well, I seem to have done it again, I have found another site with a strange name, one you would not associate with the subject matter.
I was scouring Google for information on the best nightclubs and bars in Jamaica, after all, you want people to know where they should and should not go and where they can find the sort of entetainment they are looking for.

OK, I'm not Albert Einstien but I am not as thick as a Whale sandwhich either. I typed into the Google search bar "Nightlife in Jamaica" and was presented with a list of suitable sites, one of which was aptley named "Nightlife Jamaica" so, click on the link and I see a website with flashing lights, naughty ladies and people enjoying themselves, or one would think that is what I saw.

Nope! I saw a cartoon donkey that was grinning like a WWII Japanese Zero Pilot! A donkey, y'know, "hee-haw, hee-haw!" with a back pack and Jamaica flag.

As it transpires the great and the good at the appropiatley named http://www.nightlifejamaica.com/ have decided to change the name of their website to http://www.roamingdonkey.com/

No matter! It's a great website with oodles of information on it about Jamaica, Jamaica nightlife, where to eat, what to see, what are the top rated bars, clubs etc. This website is a must to anyone who wants to hit the ground running and get into their holiday mood the second they get off the plane.

You can join this site and get first hand information from other site users.

Take a look at the Roaming Donkey website and let me know what you think.

Things Jamaicans Love

Things Jamaicans Love: Music

I have found another fantastic website called Things Jamaicans Love. The site is very funny and you will love it. I do. The site does what it say's on the tin, TJL as we shall know by, is all about those things that Jamaicans do or think of doing, things Jamaicans love to eat, things Jamaicans love to say and lots more.

You are hard pressed to find anything on this Things Jamaican Love website that is not funny or interesting.

The Definitive Guide to Jamaican Table Manners is hilarious. The following is a little extract:
3. Grill your waiter on the menu items and their accompaniments. E.g.“Is local goat or imported mutton? Mi only eat local rammy yuh know.”
“What yuh serve wid di tripe? Rice an peas? Plain rice? Food?
“ Is nuff food yuh get?”
“So I can get curry goat gravy wid di the fry chicken?”
“Is why yuh face screw up so? Yuh work inna restaurant, so mi know seh yuh nuh hungry.”

Take a look at this great site. http://www.thingsjamaicanslove.com/ramblings_2.html

Jamaica Villas - Jamaican Spices

Guess what this stuff is?

It was with some great joy that I read the Jamaica Observer online to find out that everyones favourite spicey island (unless you MUST be different!) is going to get a bit more spice.
Yup! One of the essential ingredients in your favourite "Ruby Murray" (That's curry to you John!) is that "mellow yellow" stuff called Turmeric.
Turmeric is often used by dodgey restaurant owners who add it instead of Saffron when you roll into their restaurant after a few "Zombies" too many and order Pilau rice. Let's face it, I could never tell the difference until the next day when my shirt front was bright yellow and brown.

I digress. The Jamaican farmers are test planting Turmeric with the hindrance, sorry, help (not as if matey from the ministry is going to muck in and dig the soil up, is it?) of the Ministry of Agriculture's export division. You may not believe this but Turmeric actually grows wild in Jamaica, mainly in the western parishes but it's the first time anyone has had the idea to harvest the stuff to flog on the world markets.

Laugh if you like (I did) but Sylburn Thomas, a general manager of the division, reckons that Turmeric will be an alternative to those displaced by sugar. I bet it tastes lousy in coffee though?

So, if you notice Jamaica is turning a rather bright golden yellow colour and your Blue Mountain coffee tastes a bit "iffy" just check your not putting Turmeric in, instead of sugar. Heres the report in full, read it yourself Link
